Hill Lab

We were thrilled to work on the identity design for Hill Lab – a biotech startup specializing in microbiome research. The startup aims to revolutionize healthcare by leveraging the latest advancements in microbiome science to enhance understanding and treatment of pancreatic-related conditions.

This project offered a unique opportunity to create a brand for a cutting-edge lab in the education sector and make it both memorable and relatable for the general public, as well as the scientific community. We focused heavily on both the visual brand as well as the infrastructure and language used on the website. The goal was to convey the latest work and research the lab produced, as well as give background for potential researchers and collaborations.

Color Palette

The identity design project encompasses creating a cohesive visual identity that embodies the startup's core values, scientific expertise, and innovative spirit. This includes developing a distinctive logo, defining a color palette, selecting typography, and establishing design elements that will be applied across various touchpoints.

Photography + Graphics

Much of the photography and imagery associated with the lab are directly related to their research. We decided to focus on heavily magnified imagery the lab uses to identify cells.

To bring some lighthearted fun to the brand, we incorporated some organic shapes representing the microbiota the lab spends so much of their time studying. The flowy feel of these shapes brings a nice contrast to the otherwise serious research being done on a daily basis.

Wordmark

A hand-made text logo with a small rounded serif. A toned down, modernized version inspired by the classic wedge serif fonts like Copperplate Gothic, a font style known for its commanding all-caps.

Logomark

Combining the brands graphic elements, colors, and textmark to create a full logo and experience.

Clothing & Swag

For that “coolest kid in the lab” feel. And yes, they have jackets.

Typeface

Motivated by her love for the pixel, Sol Matas designed Bitter.

A "contemporary" typeface for comfortably reading on any computer or device. The robust design started from the austerity of the pixel grid, based on rational rather than emotional principles.

Website

Too often the science community is isolated from the general public - we did our best to use approachable language, an easily understandable information heiarchy, while putting the needs and goals of Hill Lab first. Check out their live website using the button link below.
